Duranglers on the San Juan

San Juan River Tips

Duranglers is lucky to call home one of the finest, year-round fisheries in the world. Many anglers have fished it before, but we are confident that we can help you discover the magical San Juan River again. Here is a breakdown of the seasons with tips on what, how, and where to fish.

Spring (250-5,000 cfs.)
One of the best kept secrets on the San Juan is how good the fishing is when the world starts to wake up from its winter nap.The flow is gradually increased to 5,000 cfs during the runoff, but most people don't know that the fishing quality goes up too! Late season snow flurries bring out the hatches and can create some great dry fly opportunities. Between hatches, look for shallow and deep nymphing opportunities.

  • #26 Single Adult Midge $1.95
  • #22 Creme or Olive Midge Larva $1.50
  • #20 Gray WD $1.60
  • #18 Orange Annelid $1.50

Summer (5,000-500 cfs.)
This is when most people fish the San Juan, but there is plenty of river for everyone to enjoy. Some of the best dry fly fishing happens on the San Juan and most people don't even notice it! There are so many dry fly and sight-nymphing opportunities that your strike indicators should get very little use. Explore the river a little; you will be very surprised what you find in many of the back channels.

  • #12 Parachute Hopper $2.75
  • #12 Peacock Caddis $1.95
  • #18Tan X-Caddis $1.95
  • #22 Chocolate RS‑2 $1.75
  • #24 Chocolate Midge Pupa $1.60

Fall (250-500 cfs.)
The Blue Wing Olive (BWO) mayflies re-emerge in the fall and are very important. Start your morning off with midge and polish off the day with BWO. The weather cools down, but the action stays hot!

Keep an eye out for fish eating emergers. They have seen lots of flies all summer, so keep your casts precise and your tippet thin. Often the overcast days have the best dry fly activity.

  • #22 Parachute Adams $1.95
  • #22 Sparkle Dun $1.95
  • #22 BWO Barr's Emerger $1.75
  • #26 Black Flash Midge Pupa $1.60

Winter (250-500 cfs.)
The best way to stay warm in the winter is to come fish the San Juan River. The powerful sun helps make even the January days comfortable. Don't stop fishing, ever!

Don't give up on dries, but winter is a great time to improve your indicator fishing. The indicator is very useful for getting a good drift as well as detecting strikes.

  • #22 Griffith Gnat $1.95
  • #22 BWO Thorax $1.95
  • #20 Red Annelid $1.50
  • #24 Black Magic Pupa $1.60
