How to Roll-Mend

by David Grossman

The Roll-Mend is a useful line handling technique for nymphing. At the end of the drift, bring the rod back and make a roll cast. As soon as the line lands on the water, mend the line upstream.

Especially effective when casting the usual indicator/weight rig necessary for deep nymphing, the roll cast picks up the line and the mend places the line where it needs to be.

This technique is best performed with a medium-soft rod that can roll-cast effectively.

With a little practice, you will be able to Roll-Mend in a wide variety of situations and a range of distances.
